Roundtable: Hijacked Futures. Counter (Hi)stories and Complex Temporalities in Modern and Contemporary Art

The future is always a fiction. Yet this fiction is shaped differently depending on who narrates it.

Roundtable with Noit Banai (Professor of Diaspora Aesthetics, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna), Tonica Hunter (DJ, curator, lecturer, University of Applied Arts Vienna) and Eva Kernbauer (Professor of Art History, University of Applied Arts Vienna)

In this roundtable, we will discuss the specific potential of the arts to articulate temporalities and future scenarios. How can the arts hijack dominant narratives to shape counter-(hi)stories and futures beyond dystopia / utopia?
The following day, a workshop with the authors of a forthcoming special issue will extend the discussion through collaborative, text-based work.

Thursday, 19. March 2026, 6 PM
Universität für angewandte Kunst, Oskar Kokoschka-Platz 2
Ferstl-Trakt, Seminarraum 2

Organized by Barbara Reisinger (University of Applied Arts Vienna), Laura Bohnenblust (Heritage Studies, University of Vienna), Thomas Moser (TU Vienna, New Design University)
