New Blog Post: Visiting Artist Njola at Her Prater Studio
What stories can discarded materials tell?
In a new blog post, Cécile Mendy, Maeva Pimo and Renée Riedler reflect on their visit to the studio of Uganda-based artist Njola (Nabukenya Allen) during her residency at the Weltmuseum Wien. Together with Magatte Ndiaye, Rector of the University Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and his son, Bapi Ndiaye, they gained a unique behind-the-scenes insight into the artist's creative process and her latest work in progress.
The visit offered an opportunity to learn more about Njola's engagement with the politics of waste in Uganda, her innovative use of reclaimed materials such as tyres and flip-flops, and the powerful stories embedded in her large-scale assemblages.
Read the full blog to discover how Njola transforms discarded materials into compelling works of art and why her practice invites us to rethink waste, labour, and resilience.
Don't miss Njola Impressions, on view at the Theseustempel in Vienna until 11 October 2026.
