Lecture: Noémie Etienne in Theorising Materiality - Materialising Theory

We are pleased to announce that Noémie Etienne will speak as part of the lecture series Theorising Materiality – Materialising Theory in the summer semester 2026.

17 June 2026, 16:45 PM
Lecture Hall C1, Campus (University of Vienna) and Live via u:stream

In her lecture, “Global Conservation: Histories and Theories,” Noémie Etienne will reflect on how conservation practices and material knowledge are shaped by historical frameworks, global entanglements, and theoretical debates. Her talk contributes to the series’ broader aim of rethinking materiality beyond dualistic models and exploring how theory and material practice can be more deeply intertwined.

The lecture series is organised by Sandra Hindriks in cooperation with Carolin Bohlmann (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna) and Pia Gottschaller (Courtauld Institute, London). Across twelve sessions, international scholars and practitioners engage questions such as:

  • How can we move beyond hylomorphic models of materiality?

  • How can Technical Art History evolve as a field?

  • What are the limits and possibilities of transdisciplinary approaches?

  • How can theory meaningfully inform material and museum practice?

The lectures take place regularly on Wednesdays at 16:45 and are open to the public. We warmly invite you to join the discussions!
