What kind of strategies do we have in the arts and culture to respond to fascism and authoritarian discourse? In the face of intensified authoritarianism in Europe and beyond, when democratic institutions, public discourse, and fundamental freedoms are increasingly under pressure, we affirm that art and culture are not peripheral but essential to countering the mechanisms of fascisation.

On 8 October 2026 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and on 9 October 2026 at the Institute of Art History at the University of Vienna, we think and act together with international scholars, theorists, artists, activists, students, curators, and other protagonists in the broader field of art and culture. Featuring lectures, film screenings, panel discussions, performances, and workshops, we create spaces for critical inquiry, dissent, solidarity, and collective imagination. This gathering seeks to contribute to the ongoing work of defending and renewing our cultural life in a pluralistic society, and safeguarding artistic and academic freedom, across borders.
