The three-day international conference taking place from 22 to 24 April 2026 at the Weltmuseum Wien brings together scholars, artists, and independent researchers from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The event centers on Axé as a vital force shaping artistic practices, spiritual knowledge, memory, and care within the Black Diaspora.
Through panels, a keynote lecture, and a guided museum visit, the conference engages with themes such as ancestral epistemologies, contested collections, music as archive, ritual objects, and the intersections of art and spirituality. The program foregrounds living knowledge systems, embodied practices, and diasporic continuities, while critically reflecting on colonial histories, repair, and the politics of memory.
Hosted at the Weltmuseum Wien, Axé creates a space for interdisciplinary dialogue connecting material culture, sound, performance, and visual art with spiritual worlds and community-based forms of knowledge transmission.
Participation is free of charge. Find more info on the conference website.
