Alisa Santikarn Participates in Symposium on Human–Elephant Relationships in New York City
On 6 May 2026, Alisa Santikarn participated in the symposium Human-Elephant Relationships in Southeast Asia: The Implications of Historical and Scientific Knowledge for Coexistence and Conservation at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City.
The interdisciplinary symposium brought together researchers, conservationists, and students from fields including history, anthropology, conservation biology, and psychology to discuss new approaches to fostering coexistence between humans and the endangered Asian elephant. Through presentations and discussions, participants explored topics such as historical and cultural perspectives on human–elephant relationships, elephant behaviour and cognition, tourism and transportation, and human–elephant conflict in Southeast Asia.
The event highlighted the importance of combining historical, cultural, and scientific perspectives in addressing contemporary conservation challenges and promoting sustainable forms of coexistence between humans and elephants.
