Coming up this week! Taking Root: Conserving Trees and/as Heritage!

On 29–30 October, we’ll gather at the University of Vienna to discuss trees and/as heritage from a range of perspectives. From sacred forests and arboreal memory to artistic practices, colonial histories, and the violence surrounding trees and landscapes, the conference asks what it means to conserve trees as heritage – and whose knowledge, values, and relationships shape these efforts.

We’re especially looking forward to bringing different approaches and experiences into conversation, sharing ideas across disciplines, and thinking together about the many ways trees connect nature, culture, and society.

Curious about the meanings trees can hold in different cultural contexts? Our GloCo Glossary offers some insightful starting points, including entries on the De Paw tree, De Paw Thoo, and Nken pfʉeken kwetkeng kwɘtnkên.

The conference is organized by Alisa Santikarn (GloCo Project, University of Vienna) and Dacia Viejo Rose (University of Cambridge), as part of the ERC-funded project Global Conservation: Histories and Theories (GloCo).
