ICOM Conference Recap: Fresh from Rome! 🇮🇹
From 24–26 September 2025, ICOM Europe, together with ICOM Africa, ICOM Arab, ICOFOM, and other committees, hosted the international conference “Heritage, Museums, Collections. Professionals’ Sharing of Skills between Africa and Europe”. Scholars, heritage professionals, and museum experts from around the world came together to compare African and European concepts of museums and heritage, share case studies, and spark lively debates.
Noémie Etienne took the opportunity to present the newly launched GloCo Glossary 🎉 to an engaged audience. Her presentation sparked plenty of curiosity, with questions including:
Where is the server located and where is the data stored?
Who owns copyright on the material—text and images?
Who handles the data, writes the text, produces images, or puts them online?
Can we use the images or text? Is this open access and open use?
How did collaboration with African digital specialists change the process?
How did reading African theory shape the platform?
Is this a digital museum?
These are exactly the kinds of conversations that will keep shaping the project as it evolves.
Meanwhile, Cécile Mendy’s poster was featured in the Poster Session, adding another GloCo perspective to the lively discussions—even without her being there in person.
Thanks to Noémie’s photos, we can share a glimpse of the energy, debates, and connections that made this ICOM conference such an inspiring event!
