New Blog Post about Senegalese Objects in the Weltmuseum
A new post on the Heritage Studies Blog takes us behind the scenes of the Weltmuseum Wien, where Senegalese and Gambian objects are kept in the museum’s storage rooms.
In “Far from Home: Senegalese Objects in the Weltmuseum’s Storage Rooms,” Cécile Mendy reflects on her encounter with these objects and the questions their presence in a European museum raises. Among them are musical instruments, ornaments, daggers, and spears – objects whose histories extend far beyond the museum’s storage rooms.
The post considers the circumstances in which these objects entered the collection and what it means for them to be preserved far from the places and communities with which they are connected. It also reflects on possibilities for collaboration and exchange, including a potential partnership between the Weltmuseum Wien and the Centre de recherche sur les politiques sociales (CRDS) in Senegal.
