Seminar Visit to the Weltmuseum Wien

Last week, Mariama de Brito Henn visited the Weltmuseum Wien together with students from her seminar “Axé – Art and Spirituality of the Black Diaspora.” The visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with selected works and objects from the collection of the Austrian Society for Ethnomedicine.

During the session, students were introduced to key principles of object-based research. Working with a structured questionnaire, they explored different approaches to analyzing and contextualizing museum objects, gaining practical insight into methodologies of provenance and collection research.

The visit concluded with a discussion round with Henrie Dennis, the new curator of the Africa collection, offering students further perspectives on curatorial practice and the interpretation of collections.

The excursion formed an integral part of the seminar and provided valuable hands-on experience in engaging with museum collections.
