“We Only See What We Look At”: Student Poster Exhibition at the Institute of Art History

As part of the seminar Exhibiting People in the 19th Century: Places, Objects, Images, students of Noémie Etienne have produced a series of eight posters, now on display in the Aula of the Institute of Art History.

The exhibition, entitled We Only See What We Look At, brings together these student works in a shared presentation that reflects on the visual and material cultures of the 19th century. Through their posters, the students engage with questions raised in the seminar about how people have been exhibited, represented, and interpreted across different historical contexts.

The display invites visitors to reflect on issues of visibility, memory, and erasure, and on the ways in which looking itself shapes what can be known, remembered, or forgotten.

The posters are currently on view in the Aula of the Institute of Art History, Hof 9 on Campus, Garnisongasse 13, 1090 Wien.
