Meeting with the Prime Minister of Sāmoa

by Ruby Satele

On 12 May 2026, I met with Honourable Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polata'ivao Fosi Schmidt to share my ongoing research concerning Samoan ancestors whose remains, either in part or in whole, continue to be held in Austrian and German institutions. The purpose of this meeting was to raise awareness of the potential future matters relating to their care and return that may require the involvement of his office and government.

Like many people in Sāmoa, this was the first time he had heard of this history and legacies. He asked questions to better understand the context and implications of the research. It was a meaningful and productive meeting that provided an opportunity to share the findings, receive his guidance, and gain a clearer understanding of the information that may be needed to support future discussions regarding the care, return, and future of these ancestors.

The Honourable Prime Minister expressed his support for the research and offered recommendations for next steps that would enable his government to become more directly involved in these efforts.

I acknowledge the ERC-funded GLOCO project for the endorsement that has made this trip and meeting possible. A special acknowledgement to the Malae family whose determination for the success of my research project and unwavering support has been a strength during my stay.
